リック・ロバーツ。
わが疑問「なぜロバーツはマナサスへ入れてもらえなかったのか」。
これは当たらないかもしれない。ハナから（誘われたが）入る気がなかった／別バンドの準備に忙しかった、ということであったかも…。
［it doesn't matter］といえばもちろんマナサスでもあるが、ワタシにとっては…リック・ロバーツなのです。
ロバーツとスティルス・スティルス。ふたりがかなり親しい関係であったことは間違いないだろう。Firefall 期でもロバーツの著作管理が Stephen Stills Music, Inc. であったことをみても…。
マナサスでのステージにロバーツも上がっている写真を見たことがある。ツアーメンバーではあったはず。ただ取り立てて目立った楽器のプレイヤーでなく（ギターの腕はたいしたことない）歌だけのロバーツ、マナサス・メンバーというには居場所はなかったとも見える。優れたソングライターなのは事実だがそれではスティルスと被ってしまう。
ロバーツは前述の通り、ブリトー兄弟としてシーンへ登場した。２枚で抜けたＧＰの後釜、三作目【The Flying Burrito Brothers】の仕切り役としてデビュー。［Colorado］を始め名曲を披露、ワタシはこの盤でソングライターとして…声もよし、一発でファンになりました（ルックスはスーパーマリオという難点のある人だが… (T^T)） マナサスへの準参加はブリトー兄弟であったクリス・ヒルマンの紹介…でしょうな。

［it doesn't matter］、マナサス／スティルスの代表曲、７２年盤【マナサス】に収録。Hillman - Stills 作となっているがもともとはヒルマン＝ロバーツによって書かれた曲らしい。たぶんブリトー三作目のアウトテイクのひとつだろう。今回このレコがＣＤリイシューされ８曲もボートラ追加、あるかと思ったらこの曲はないね。
マナサス盤で、クレジットから名前が漏れていることについてロバーツはどう感じていたか。スティルスに詰め寄ったら〝イットダズントマタ～…気にすんじゃねぇよ～〟とあしらわれた…？ その後の関係からみてロバーツは大人の対応であったか、ケンカはしていない様子。

リック・ロバーツにとって最も成功といえるのがファイアフォール。７６年にマイケル・クラークらとともに結成、最初の３枚が全米トップ３０入り。シングルもトップ３０に３～４曲入れたか、かなり売れたバンドであった。
そのファーストのＡ面トップには、スティルスに聴かせるために（？）ファイアフォール・バージョンの［It doesn't matter］を持ってきた。ライターは三人並記。
歌詞、見ての通りにまったく違うのです。ロバーツにいわせるとこっちがオリジナルとなるが、早口になる箇所が多く、ハマりはスティルス・バージョンのほうがよい。
この曲、曲調が実にロバーツらしい…［she is a song］あたりに近い、やはりオリジナルに書いたのはロバーツだろう。スティルスは詞を書き換えたんだろうな（この詞ではスティルスが気に入らなかったのは分かるがね…）。

ファイアフォールのファースト、ロバーツによる［It doesn't matter］が初出したのは７６年だが実はロバーツはその前にオリジナル歌詞でこの曲を録音していた。
７９年にひっそりと出た「ベスト・オブ・リック・ロバーツ」。ファイアフォールの成功をみて出したのは見え見えの盤。しかしＡ＆Ｍから Atlantic 音源を出すこともできず、ロバーツのソロ２作とブリトー三枚目からのコンピでお茶をにごした。とぼけた盤で、ここにまったく unreleased take の［It doesn't matter］を収録しながらクレジットには "this album contains previouly released material" と入れるオバカぶり。いったい誰にたいして売ろうとしたのやら…。
メンバークレジットはなく著作年もレコ発売の７９年となっているこのテイクだが、唯一 produced by David Anderle とある。となればアンダールがプロデュースしたロバーツのファーストソロ ('72) でのアウトテイクと判断できる。この盤、ベーシックは Don Henley / Lee Sklar のリズム隊だが、ヒルマン／ダラス・テイラー／ジョー・ララ／アル・パーキンスらマナサスのメンツも参加している。
で、聴くに［It doesn't matter］、ドラムはヘンリーではなく明かにテイラー。ペダルはアル。やっぱりこのテイクこそ「マナサス演奏によるオリジナル［It doesn't matter］」。裏ジャケのライナーにも… "here, on this album, is the original recording of [It doesn't matter], cut by Rick himself shortly after the song was written."
オルガンはマイク・アトリーでリードギターはマーク・ベノとみた。
実に貴重な１曲…と悦に入るのは古今東西ワタシだけ…なんだよなぁ、、これが。
